After finishing all my essays for college this month, and preparing for three major speaking engagements (after an approx 12 month rest), I’m packing up my house ready to move to a new home. Normally, this would be easy with Emily around, but since she is ready to ‘pop’ with our new baby, things are slightly more complicated. Wish me luck.

Hence, blogging has not been priority, and may not be over the coming weeks, but I’ll see what I can do.

In the Spirit of bgnmdtnt, I leave you with a video especially geared for all of you involved with a church. Emily and found great humour, stark truth, and sadly, a contemporary reality in this because we’ve both worked at a church. And like Dorothy in Oz, we’ve seen the man behind the curtain.

Does the church that you go employ clever coercion (technical, programming etc.) to create a spiritual atmosphere more than they should?

In his message last May, the Pope acknowledged that priests face new challenges due to cultural shifts that have brought the conversation online. Thus, priests must do more than just take the Word of the gospel to the web.

Here’s a small excerpt from the entire message from the Pope:

“The spread of multimedia communications and its rich “menu of options” might make us think it sufficient simply to be present on the Web, or to see it only as a space to be filled. Yet priests can rightly be expected to be present in the world of digital communications as faithful witnesses to the Gospel, exercising their proper role as leaders of communities which increasingly express themselves with the different “voices” provided by the digital marketplace. Priests are thus challenged to proclaim the Gospel by employing the latest generation of audiovisual resources (images, videos, animated features, blogs, websites) which, alongside traditional means, can open up broad new vistas for dialogue, evangelization and catechesis.”

This seems like a step in the right direction. Although, I’ve no doubt that priestly bloggers can look forward to the initial wave of colourful comments and expletive replies from the multitude of ignored abuse victims.
