Go on, beat yourself!

This morning’s prayer meeting was ever bit as good as yesterday mornings meeting. A few attendees’ were caught out with early morning icy windows and some with sleeplessness due to sick infants, but eventually we got the show on the road. One started, we discussed a passage from the Bible again (no apologies for that), were a guy named Paul in the New Testament highlights the issues of discipline in his letter to a church in a place called Cornith.(1 Cornith (9:24-27)

Paul tells the church that they need to look after their spiritual life like an athlete, learn to beat down the body, and run the race as if to win a prize. Most of the guys that attend morning prayer ‘work-out’ and have a strong inclination toward training their body and watching their diets to some level. Bearing this in mind, the main discussion lay with how much we actually trained our lives spiritually. Honesty prevailed again. Like myself, the guys are, or have been going through periods of unhealthy prioritisation, and simply need and want more healthy discipline to prioritisation in order to beat down their bodies to become more like the image of God.

Someone once said that discipline is forcing yourself to do something that you don’t want to do. This rings true with me for sure. Like physical training, the challenge to train, eat and workout like a spiritual athlete is always and will forever be a great challenge. I think I need a bit of flab off again, but generally, I am in a lot better shape than I was this time last year, so I am happy. Like physical training, I must press on to make spiritual goals this year as I did last year with physical goals like triathlon or a marathon cycle. Lastly, I could not finish the issue of discipline without quoting the wise words of Dr. Gillian McKeith, “you are what you” eat.
